A Wakefield school has been celebrating raising money for projects in our link diocese of Mara in Tanzania.
Ackworth Howard School in Pontefract has managed to raise over £2000, to be shared between the ACT Mara Safe House and the Howard School’s partner primary school, Mshikamano (Solidarity) Primary School.
The money was raised in several ways, with £1000 raised through Tri Tri Tri for Tanzania, a triathlon.
£600 was raised through a school family BBQ, Comic Relief and Tanzania Days, with the children raising over £300 with their own ideas outside of school.
Diane Norton, diocesan school advisor for religious education, said: “Triathlons, Cake sales, family BBQ, children donating birthday money – just some of the wonderful ways the Ackworth Howard school community have raised funds for the Safe House in Tanzania.
“Each one of the girls helped, supported and rescued at the Safe House will appreciate every penny.
“The staff rely on such kindness and donations to continue such vital work.
“Michael’s school is a real inspiration and example of courageous advocacy!”
This success provoked the school’s thinking about their most recent art week, along the theme of ‘Inspiring Hope’.
The different years in the school all engaged in different art projects, such as mask making, fabric design, protest poster production and watercolour painting.
Michael Walker, head teacher of the school, said: “It has been wonderful to see how the Tanzania link has impacted on our children's spiritual development.
“They have become increasingly confident in challenging injustices they feel strongly about as a result and have experienced a lot from working with and learning from our Tanzanian friends.”
