Governance

Church schools have foundation governors as well as parent, staff and other categories of governor. In a voluntary aided school (VA), the foundation governors must have a majority of two over all other categories of governor. 
In a voluntary controlled School (VC), at least two and up to 25% members of the governing body will be foundation governors.
In academies, the church foundation will also be represented at all levels of governance.

Every school has its own 'Instrument of Government' which sets out the number of governors to be appointed to each category, and in the case of foundation governors, which body or bodies appoint them.  Usually, the appointing body(ies) are the Diocesan Board of Education, the local church PCC and/or a Trust.
The local vicar(s) is normally appointed as 'ex-officio' Foundation Governor(s).

As well as participating fully in the life of the governing body, like any other governor, foundation governors also have special responsibilities for sustaining and developing the school's Christian character and ensuring that the school’s trust deed is upheld, particularly in respect of pupil admissions (for VA and foundation schools), staff appointments, provision for collective worship, provision for RE and preservation of the assets of the school’s Trust.

All governors must be able to contribute to the effective strategic leadership of the school and equally all governors should be aware of the requirements for Church schools, whether or not they are foundation governors.
