Poppy banner sparks community imagination

It was only supposed to be a small banner to hang in the village church every Remembrance weekend.

But the poppy-making project so inspired the local community of Flockton that St James’s church now has a cascade of over 1,000 poppies - and their simple idea has turned into an exhibition weekend.

Angela Griffith, organist and St James’s church member for 40 years, explains: “It just snowballed. Before we knew it, we had children at the local primary school and pre-school involved, the Livability Home, the Memory Group, the First Thursday Seniors and the Wednesday @2 group for carers and toddlers.

“It really caught the imagination of the whole community,” she added.

They started making the poppies in January this year and now have over 1,000 – made from a wide range of different handicrafts including paper, knitted and felted poppies.

And on Saturday 11 November they will open up a Remembrance Exhibition in church to display them all with refreshments and music. They have even borrowed a special poppy inspired altar frontal produced by Lancashire artist, Lizzie Wall.

The Mayor of Kirklees, Coun Christine Iredale and local MP, Paula Sherriff, Labour MP for Dewsbury, Mirfield, Denby Dale and Kirkburton will be there.

Doors open at 10-4pm on Saturday and 2pm -4.30pm on Sunday.

All donations will go the Royal British Legion.
