The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) have announced significant changes to the way they will fund repairs to listed churches.
The changes will mean that for the first time in 40 years there is no state supported funding for church repairs despite the C of E caring for over 45% of the nations listed buildings.
The Heritage Lottery Fund has decided to close the dedicated Grants for Places of Worship Scheme (GPOW). Instead, they are encouraging churches to apply through their open grant programmes; Our Heritage (grants up to £100K) and Heritage Grants (over £100k). They have issued a press release, which is available here.
On the face of it, this is going to present difficulties in attracting funding for repairs; however, it can also be seen as an opportunity to better engage with mission, an opportunity for churches to engage with our communities, using heritage activities, in new and exciting ways.
Whilst the scheme will still be accepting applications in the May and August rounds, competition is expected to be fierce. We know that there are a number of churches who were planning to submit an application to the scheme in the coming months. If you are in this situation and would like to discuss your project further, do please contact Susan Rundle (email@example.com) or Uell Kennedy (firstname.lastname@example.org).
We will be running a series of training events in the autumn (dates will be published in due course) to help churches rethink how they might still access the funding. If your church has been caught up in the changes, or is anticipating an application to the scheme beyond September and would welcome some training on how best to apply through the new programmes, please let us know so we can organise the appropriate trainings in the right locations. If this is something you would be interested in, please let Cath Fox know via SFDadmin@leeds.anglican.org.
For further information, the Cathedral and Church Buildings Division has produced a briefing note, which outlines the Church of England’s position and suggests how we might respond. Click here for to the briefing note.

The opportunities to develop our mission and reach out into the community are great, but they often come at a cost which cannot always be met through the regular giving of the church members. There is a wealth of information available to help churches looking for funding, not least through the funding guides on the Parish Resources website.
Support and advice is available through the team to help with funding projects. Look out for regular training events on applying for funding or Susan or Uell can come out to visit your parish and have a chat about the opportunities and challenges specific to your project.
We will provide details of any on-going and one off funding opportunities that we hear about here, or if you want to receive emails alerting you to new funds available, do email us at email@example.com and we’ll add you to our mailing list.
