In January 2026 the government announced that the Listed Places of Worship Grant Scheme (LPWGS), which allowed listed churches to claim back VAT on building works, would end. Most works of repair, maintenance and alteration to church buildings are standard rated for VAT. There are some works that may be reduced or zero rated.
