Wakefield Cathedral is delighted to announce the appointment of John Eager as its new Chief Operating Officer, with John set to take up the role in September 2026.
John joins the Cathedral following a career supporting world-leading science, environmental research and complex organisations, including roles with the British Antarctic Survey, the Peak District National Park and the National Centre for Atmospheric Science.
John impressed the appointments panel and staff team alike with his leadership experience, operational expertise and understanding of the opportunities and challenges of working within a cathedral setting.
Commenting on his appointment, John said: "I am delighted to be joining the Wakefield Cathedral team as Chief Operating Officer in September.
“I look forward to joining the Cathedral community and its values: Joyful, Generous and Inclusive.
“I have been lucky enough to work in some of the most inspiring places and with some of the most dedicated and passionate people in the world: Antarctica, with the British Antarctic Survey, The Peak District National Park and the National Centre for Atmospheric Science.
“I am humbled to now be able to soon add Wakefield Cathedral, its staff and the amazing community.
“I will bring my operational skills, knowledge and passion to the role, to support the Vision and the Mission of the Cathedral.

The Very Revd Dr Philip Hobday, Dean of Wakefield, said: "In a very strong field, John stood out as having real understanding of the possibilities and constraints of working in a wonderful place like Wakefield Cathedral, and brings substantial experience of leading operations in demanding and complex organisations.

The Cathedral's Chapter and staff team have warmly welcomed the appointment and are looking forward to John joining the organisation later this year as it continues to develop its ministry, mission and service to the people of Wakefield and beyond.
