Forging new friendships across the faiths: Interfaith Week

A Clerics supper launches Interfaith Week in Kirklees and a Speed Faithing event is planned in Leeds,  just two of the events to mark National Interfaith Week this week.

Christian and Muslim leaders gathered for a clerics supper last weekend in Dewsbury to launch National Interfaith Week. For the sixth year, Kirklees Faith Forum will be running a wide variety of events for Interfaith Week which this year will commemorate the anniversary of the First World War.

Up and down our diocese, events are being held to create new friendships, strengthen interfaith relations and increase awareness of the different and distinct faith communities here in West Yorkshire and the Dales and beyond.

In Leeds this week there is a Speed Faithing session held At Leeds Trinity University and school choirs will sing and different faith prayers will be said on the hour in the Merrion Centre Shopping Centre this Thursday (see Area news story here). ICelebrating Divali together in Kirklees schooln Kirklees in the Huddersfield Episcopal Area there are a wide range of exciting events in partnership with schools, voluntary organisations, statutory organisations and local residents including Kirklees Faiths Forum’s Annual General Meeting and Celebration Evening, hands-on-faith workshops (Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Christian and Sikh) to learn how people of different faiths contributed, and the effects of war.

Visitors can also have their chance to discuss faith and conscientious objectors at the Focus on Faith lecture with a faith panel and author Cyril Pearce, who has written Comrades in Conscience – The story of an English community’s opposition to the Great War.

People can help support Kirklees Faith Forum’s ‘Pledge a Pound’ and “Bring a Tin’ appeal which this year is supporting local food banks and the Cities of Service ‘Out and About’ initiative, tackling the problem of loneliness amongst Kirklees’ older population.

Events are taking place in North and South Kirklees. All events are free. For further information and to view the guide, listing all events please visit the Kirklees Faiths Forum website www.kirkleesfaithsforum.org.uk or telephone 01924 326425.
