Hope lunch raises funds for teenage cancer charity
Five hundred invitations were posted round the parish of St Saviour’s Brownhill in the Episcopal Area of Huddersfield inviting residents to come to lunch.
The Year of Hope lunch was inspired and part funded by the £100 gift from the former Bishop of Wakefield, the Rt Revd Stephen Platten who gave every church in the historic Diocese of Wakefield £100 to kickstart a community project to mark his 10th anniversary as diocesan bishop and to look forward to Hope 2014.
So on a beautiful autumnal day last week, St Saviour’s opened its doors for lunch.
Churchwarden, Kate Anderson said they had hoped for a good response…but also prayed that not every one of the 500 would turn up!
They counted the soup bowls to find they had served 76 diners – many of whom had never been to an event at the church before – and by asking for a minimum donation of £1, the lunch raised a fantastic £300 for the Teenage Cancer Trust at the same time.
“Every family was given a copy of our church magazine, a palm cross and a booklet of prayers entitled "Finding Hope'.
“Everyone agreed that it had been a great event, and we raised over £300 for the Teenage Cancer Trust - bringing hope to others too,” she added.
