Dean John Dobson has announced that Ripon Cathedral's longest serving Residentary Canon, Keith Punshon, is to retire. In a letter to Cathedral staff and volunteers, Dean John paid tribute to his colleague, "It is eighteen years since Keith and Carol came to Ripon, and things will now seem very different without them. We will all miss them, not least members of Chapter, staff, and volunteers.
"Canon Keith has seen the Cathedral through many changes, happy times and difficulties. He will be remembered for many positive contributions to this community’s life, including developments at Thorpe Prebend House, the Cathedral’s stunning glass doors, and liaison with military communities across the region. His crowning achievement, perhaps, was as sub-dean in the vacancy following Dean Keith’s death; he managed to provide clear leadership that helped the Cathedral to come together in very difficult and tragic circumstances.
"I have known Keith for only the few months since my appointment was announced. In that time he has been the best of colleagues, providing generous support and friendship. I am only sorry that he will not allow us an opportunity to sing his praises publicly and a farewell party for him and Carol: it has not been for the want of pleading with him! However, I respect his desire to leave without a fuss, in the same way that I respect his reasons for retiring."
Canon Keith Punshon at 66, is withdrawing from full-time ministry and took his last service in the Cathedral on the morning of Monday 29th September. He will now be on holiday until his retirement officially begins on October 24th. Dean John will make an announcement on Sunday 5th October about how people can help express the Cathedral’s gratitude and best wishes.
