Ripon Cathedral commissions World War 1 installation

Wilfrid OwenAn installation inspired by the words of Wilfrid Owen, which has been created by  York artist and sculptor, Charlie Gurrey,  will be officially unveiled and dedicated at a special service being held in Ripon Cathedral on Saturday November 1st

The Cathedral commissioned ‘The Pity of War’, a series of five oak panels inspired by words from Wilfrid Owen,  as part of the national remembrance for 100 years since the start of World War I and to commemorate those who have fought and died in warfare.

The Installation will be dedicated during a special service at 5pm on November 1st  in Ripon Cathedral.  Music will be led by the Ripon City Band,  and the Cathedral Choir, there will be readings  and poetry as well as congregational singing.

The panels have been inspired by the words of Wilfred Owen’s foreword to his final volume,  ‘My subject is war’ and the five panels will be erected on the wall of the Chapel of Justice and Peace in the north-west corner of the Cathedral.

Julia Barker, Ripon Cathedral’s Director of Operations said, “The project wanted to provide a focal point for the chapel to help people to reflect on justice and peace and the sacrifices that have been made to achieve that.

“The words of Wilfred Owen were chosen due to his association with the cathedral and the area and his position as one of the foremost WW1 poets. It obviously comes at a time of national remembrance due to the 100 anniversary of the outbreak of WW1 but this is to all men and women who have died in conflict at any time.”
