Singing all the way to St Paul’s for BBC R2 Young Chorister of the Year

A Wakefield Cathedral chorister, Molly Cochrane, has been chosen as one of the finalists in the BBC Radio 2 Young Choristers of the Year competition.

Molly, aged 16, has been shortlisted as one of the four girls in the prestigious national competition which will hear all four girls and the four male finalists perform a hymn extract and a sacred anthem in St Paul’s Cathedral on Friday 31 October.

The winners will be announced on the night and you can hear them all in a special programme broadcast on Radio 2 on Thursday 13 November at 10.00pm.

The competition concert will not be the first time the talented school girl from Horbury has performed at St Paul’s.

Molly, who attends Wakefield Girls High School, was selected to join the Diamond Choir for the Queen’s Jubilee in 2012. And last year she was a reserve finalists in the BBC Radio 2 competition so is delighted to have been shortlisted for the final this year.

Her family plan to travel down to watch her and last night her mum, Roz said “She has been singing all her life and we are all really proud of her.”

Wakefield Cathedral’s Director of Music, Tom Moore said: “We are absolutely delighted that Molly has been chosen as a finalist in this BBC 2 Young Chorister of the Year competition and incredibly proud of our musical tradition here.

“We had a finalist a couple of years ago in this competition, and last year Molly herself was a reserve finalist. It is a triumph for us all here at the Cathedral where we offer boys and girls choral scholarships for a unique musical experience.”
