The Formation Team

The Formation Team

Who are we?

We are a team of people whose vocation is to discern, train, resource and equip confident lay and ordained ministry within the Anglican Diocese of Leeds.

What do we do?

We build confidence by empowering, equipping, and enabling God’s people to worship and minister in the ways they are being called. Our work is rooted in deep investment in people and relationships, expanding participation in ministry and in doing so, nurturing the growth of our churches.

How do we do this?

We carry out our work with truthfulness, joy, and kindness; enabling a space where a variety of people are free to think aloud without fear of judgment.

Clergy Development Team

There is a team of five Clergy Development Officers working together across the diocese. Each Clergy Development Officer (CDO) oversees both the Initial Ministerial Education for the Curates (IME) and Continuing Ministerial Development (CMD) for the clergy in their own episcopal area.

Please contact the CDO for your episcopal area with any queries about CMD or with requests for CMD grants. If there is a vacancy, please contact Steve Proudlove, Director of Ministry Formation and Development.

Licensed Lay Ministry Training Pathway (LLMTP)

Licensed Lay Ministers (formerly known as Readers) hold a national licence which is transferable between Dioceses. This lay leadership role is focussed on a threefold ministry: Teachers of the Faith; Enablers of Mission; Leaders in Church and Society. Licensed Lay Ministers work collaboratively with their clergy in leading their parish church, often taking responsibility for lay discipleship or outreach, for example, under the supervision and authority of their incumbent and PCC.

Licensed Lay Ministers can come from any walk of life. God calls people, through the Church, into particular ministries. The discernment process involves the local Church (incumbent and PCC), a selection committee, and those involved in offering training. Trainee Licensed Lay Ministers spend time in theological training and in a programme of formational activities such as parish placements and formational mentor groups. There is also assessed preaching and worship leading every term. On successful completion of the initial training they are licensed.

The Licensed Lay Ministry (LLM) Training Pathway provides training for Licensed Lay Ministry in partnership with St Hild College.  St Hild provides academic teaching through Common Awards (Durham University) online and in-person at Bingley in The Trinity Centre and at Mirfield, in The Mirfield Centre. The diocese provides formational activities to complement the academic studies together with overall discernment throughout training.
