Fundraising and Grants

If you are looking to make changes to your church building, you might be eligible for some grants or loans to help finance your project.

The following list is not exhaustive, and it is always worth checking if there are any insitutions in your local area or specialist organisations which might offer some support.

More information on grants and fundraising can be found on the Stewardship page. You can also contact Alena Douglas-Rose or the Stewardship Team.

Major building projects

National Churches Trust have various funding streams for small, medium, large, and multi-phase projects. There are several deadlines throughtout the year.

National Lottery Heritage Fund (formerly known as HLF) offter grants for major projects that improve your building’s facilities for the benefit of the wider community (ie: not just for worship). They have two levlels of funding: £10,000 - £250,000 and £250,00 - £10,000,000. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and their website has lots of guidance on how to apply and what type of projects may be eligible.

Repair and maintenance works

Whilst there are several sources of funding for building developments with benefits to the wider community, it is not always easy to get grants and funding for maintenance and repairs to keep church building fabric in good condition.

ChurchCare offer some grants for conservation projects and also offer additional suggestions for other possible sources of conservation grants funding.

Yorkshire Historic Churches Trust are a ‘funder of last resort’ – they expect you to have most of the funding already secured from PCC reserves, local fundraising or other grants, but may be able to offer a top-up grant.
