The bishops of the Diocese of Leeds stand in solidarity with Jewish communities in the diocese and beyond, following the attack in Sydney.
Their statement can be read below.
"We are deeply shocked and saddened by the mass shooting targeting the Australian Jewish community as they gathered to celebrate the first night of Chanukah. Our prayers are with all those killed and injured in this horrific attack, their families, and with all who are affected, including our Jewish friends and neighbours here in Leeds and West Yorkshire.
"We stand in solidarity with the Jewish community in Sydney and with Jewish communities across the Diocese of Leeds and beyond. There are many Chanukah celebrations planned across the UK and across the Diocese in the coming days, and as our Jewish friends, neighbours and communities continue to gather to celebrate, we stand firm in stating that all people should be free to celebrate festivals and worship in safety, without fear.
"We will continue to pray that the light of Chanukah gives us the courage to stand together against antisemitism and hatred in all its forms and with a shared commitment to the sanctity of every human life."
