One of our Ripon area churches has been warming up for the winter and going green at the same time, thanks to a new electrical power and heating project.
The Diocese of Leeds has been pleased to recently welcome Alasdair Hicks, our new Net Zero Church Buildings Officer, who will be working with churches to help make their buildings more efficient and supporting them in reaching their Net Zero Carbon emissions targets.
St Oswald’s Methley in the Leeds area is celebrating its Eco Church Gold Award, achieved in November 2025, completing a committed journey from Bronze in 2021 and Silver in 2022.
The Rt Revd Anna Eltringham, Bishop of Ripon and Lead Bishop for the Environment in the Diocese of Leeds, recently met Archbishop Marinez of Brazil, also Bishop of Amazonia, at a round-table discussion with Christian Aid, A Rocha and others at Lambeth Palace.
Schools across the diocese are being encouraged to reduce their carbon footprints, with some 40% signed up to the Let’s Go Zero campaign.
Churches across the Diocese of Leeds aiming to reduce their carbon emissions are invited to apply for a Net Zero Carbon Quick Wins grant to kickstart a small-scale decarbonisation project.
Thanks to a Diocesan Net Zero Carbon Quick Wins Fund grant, St Wilfrid’s Harrogate have been able to make changes to their lighting on their path to net zero, and there are still grants available.
During this Season of Creation, the Church of England is encouraging all churches to consider switching to a green energy tariff as part of a campaign for there to be a Great Switch for Creation.

The first full retrofit of a clergy home to make it both greener and warmer in line with our commitment to Net Carbon Zero has been completed thanks to “fantastic” work by the diocesan Property Team.
