General Functions (powers and duties)

To promote or assist in the promotion of:
- education in the Diocese, consistent with the faith and practice of the Church of England;
- religious education and religious worship in schools in the Diocese;
- church schools in the Diocese;
- co-operation between itself and the other persons concerned with education in the Diocese

To advise and direct governors, trustees, proprietors and any other body/person concerned on any matter affecting church schools in the Diocese;

To provide advice and direction and give approval to schools or academies seeking to discontinue a school, or to make a change of status to a school, including making a change to the instrument of government or applying for an academy order, or to change the admission arrangements for a school;

To provide advice and direction and give approval for the disposal of any school / academy premises;

To provide advice and direction and approval to any trustees of a church educational endowment in connection with a church school where applications are sought for an alteration to the endowment;

To provide advice, consent and approval to governors, and in the case of academies proprietors, of a church school for any repairs or alterations to premises;

To monitor the quality of provision of a church school and by extension to provide support and guidance to schools and, where the Board is concerned, to intervene including directing the governing body or proprietor to permit the inspection by the DBE of the education or worship concerned;

The Board shall have power to do all such things as are incidental or conducive to the discharge of its functions, including matters that relate to Education Acts, Statutory Guidance from DfE or HMI / Ofsted, guidance from the National Society including about the Statutory Inspection of Anglican schools;

The Board shall prepare and make a report annually to synod on the exercise of its functions.
