Basic Awareness
Basic awareness is a self-directed online course. It is recommended for any who wants or needs basic awareness about safeguarding in church settings.
Basic Awareness is REQUIRED for:
- All Church Officers, staff in church bodies and bell ringers - A ‘Church officer’ is anyone appointed/elected by or on behalf ofthe Church to a post or role, whether they are ordained or lay, paid or unpaid (CofE, 2021),
- Anyone going on to complete any other Church of England safeguarding course
Basic Awareness must be completed as part of an induction process and be refreshed on a three-yearly cycle.
Foundation
Foundation is a self-directed online course. It is REQUIRED training for:
- Anyone holding the bishop's licence, commission, authorisation, or permission - including clergy, those with permission to officiate (PtO), readers, licenced lay ministers (LLMs).
- Anyone (volunteers and employees) in a role which involves work with children, young people or vulnerable adults, including tower captians and ringing teachers.
- Churchwardens
- Pre-ordination or licence students, prior to stage 1 Panel
- Vergers
- PCC Members/Lay Chapter Members/ DBF trustees
- Members of the Diocesan Safeguarding Advisory Panel
- Anyone going on to complete any other Church of England safeguarding course
Completion of Basic Awareness training is a pre-requisite.

Leadership
Leadership is delivered by our diocesan safeguarding trainers using zoom and is designed for those people who play a lead role in shaping the culture of the church body concerned. It is REQUIRED training for:
- All clergy holding the Bishop’s licence, commission, authorisation, or permission (including PtO when the PtO Pathway is not sufficient) including honorary / assistant bishops and chaplains.
- All Readers and Licensed Lay Ministers (LLMs) holding the Bishop’s licence (under Canons E6 & E8) together with others who hold the bishop's commission, authorisation or permission to carry out similar ministerial functions (including PtO when the PtO Pathway is not sufficient).
- Ordinands need to have completed the Leadership Pathway before their diaconal ordination and lay ministers in training before they are licensed, authorised or commissioned.
- Non-executive members of Chapter (unless their role in the diocese requires a higher level)
- Teaching staff at Theological Education Institutions who are delivering the Leadership Pathway
- Safeguarding Officers / Leads in all church bodies.
- Tower Captains at prominent towers (including Cathedrals, towers with frequent visitors or people learning) and the district chair / district safeguarding lead of bellringing guilds / councils should complete the Leadership pathway.
- Churchwardens during vacancies.
Completion of Basic Awareness and Foundation training is a prerequisite for completion of Leadership.
Leadership must be completed within 6 months of starting in role and must be refreshed on a three-yearly cycle.

Permission to Officiate (PtO) Pathway
PtO Pathway is delivered by our diocesan safeguarding trainers with a choice of zoom or in person delivery at Church House, Leeds and is REQUIRED training for:
- Anyone applying for or already holding PtO in the diocese of Leeds, both clergy and Licenced Lay Ministers (LLMs) / Readers and must be refreshed on a three-yearly cycle.

Parish Safeguarding Officer (PSO) Induction
PSO Induction is delivered by our diocesan safeguarding trainers with a choice of zoom or in person delivery at Church House, Leeds and is REQUIRED training for:
- All new PSOs
Completion of Basic Awareness and Foundation training is a pre-requisite and Raising Awareness of Domestic Abuse and Safer Recruitment and People Management within the first 6 months in role.

Raising Awareness of Domestic Abuse
Raising Awareness of Domestic Abuse is a self-directed on line course. It is recommended for all people who holding a pastoral role.
It is REQUIRED training for:
- Anyone holding the Bishop’s licence, commission, authorisation, or permission (clergy, PtO, Readers, LLMs) or serving as an officer of the bishop
- Anyone (volunteers and employees) working with children, young people and vulnerable adults including Bishop's Visitors and Pastoral Visitors
- Safeguarding Officers / safeguarding leads including designated safeguarding person in a religious community.
- Pre-ordindation or licence students prior to selection panel.
It is RECOMMENDED trainng for:
- PCC Members and Chapter Members
- Members of the Diocesan Safeguarding Advisory Panel.
- All church officers
Completion of Basic Awareness training is a pre-requisite.
Raising Awareness of Domestic Abuse must be completed within 6 months of starting in role and must be refreshed on a three-yearly cycle.
Access Domestic Abuse Awareness Training
Safer Recruitment and People Management
Safer Recruitment and People Management is a self-directed online course. It is REQUIRED training for:
- Recruiting managers and anyone involved in the recruitment of Church Officers (employees, elected members and volunteers). Including, but not limited to:
- Those with responsibility for administering DBS
- Safeguarding Officers in all Church bodies including designated safeguarding person in a religious community.
- Ordinands during IME 1
Completion of Basic Awareness and Foundation training is a pre-requisite.
Safer Recruitment and People Management Training must be completed within 6 months of starting in role and must be refreshed on a three-yearly cycle.
