What we do
As Safeguarding Advisers, the team:
- Ensure effective safeguarding arrangements are in place across the diocese;
- Act as a point of contact to assist with safeguarding concerns, including those where someone may appear to pose a risk to a church community;
- Offer practical advice on policies, procedures and practice guidance;
- Deliver safeguarding training in line with the national programme;
- Advise on safe recruitment and DBS issues where there are blemished disclosures.

If you have concerns for your mental state or you feel there is an immediate and serious danger to yourself or another person/child:
- call 999 immediately for an ambulance or the police
- or you can also call 111 when you need medical advice fast but it’s not a 999 emergency
National Safeguarding Team
Contact the National Team: The National Safeguarding Team (NST) is working to increase the capacity and expertise of parishes, diocese and other Church of England institutions to respond to safeguarding concerns and support victims and survivors. They are not able to offer either an emergency 24-hour response but there are Safeguarding Advisors in every diocese and Safeguarding Officers in every parish.
Please note : The Diocesan Safeguarding Team has a secure electronic system for retaining any safeguarding information we receive. Access to the information is restricted to those in the team who are working on the concern and complies to our privacy commitment under the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR). We may, on occasions, share this information with statutory organisations in order to comply with our obligations under national legislation. Where it is necessary for the safeguarding of children or vulnerable adults, we will share information with others involved in safeguarding within the church but we will inform you of our intention to do so. Further information can be obtained from the Safeguarding team upon request.
