The government is looking for feedback on the Listed Places of Worship Grant Scheme, taking into account the changes for this year.
The scheme refunds VAT spent on repairs and alterations to listed places of worship, enabling them to reclaim the VAT paid on certain kinds of repair, maintenance and alteration works.
It has been running for many years, but it has been guaranteed only until March 2026, and a cap of £25,000 has been introduced from April 2025.
Harlow Consulting have been commissioned by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport to evaluate the scheme, and have issued a survey for places of worship to complete.
The survey must be completed by Tuesday, March 25.
Andrew Hall, Chair of the Diocesan Advisory Committee, said: “This scheme provides extremely valuable support for vital repairs to our churches, where often parishes will struggle financially to meet the costs of essential works.
“Unfortunately, the new scheme is less useful for those churches who face major bills.
“This survey gives churches a chance to make sure this need will again be recognised, by offering feedback to the government.
“I strongly encourage all whose church is a listed building to respond, so we can make clear that more support for these historic and important buildings is needed.”
The questionnaire asks for basic information about a place of worship, its finances and its condition, then about whether the place of worship has benefited from the Listed Places of Worship Grant Scheme.
