Grand days out thanks to charity support for a Leeds church community

Dozens of children and adults have enjoyed special summer days out, thanks to hard work by one of our Leeds churches and funding by a generous local charity.
St Agnes church serves the people of Burmantofts and Richmond Hill – the most deprived council ward in Leeds – and members organised trips to Forbidden Corner, the popular family attraction near Middleham and to Bridlington for the seaside and fish and chips.
Organiser Gill Wigham told how thanks to the Leeds-based Wades Charity, everyone had great experiences without hurting their pockets.
“At Forbidden Corner we had a picnic and we were blessed with dry weather. Everyone got two rounds of sandwiches, packet of crisps, two biscuits, two pieces of fruit and cold drinks,” said Gill.
“On the way home we called at Brymor Ice Cream Parlour, everyone had a choice of two scoops of ice-cream in cornet or tub. There was a petting farm and a large play area.
“The children really benefited just from seeing farm animals in fields as we journeyed through open countryside and having to use their wits in Forbidden Corner.
“The cost of everything was provided thanks to Wade’s Charity and that included coach travel, lunch, drinks, entry to the attraction and even the ice creams,” Gill said.
A similar all-expenses-paid trip to Bridlington also took place this summer with a wide range of the local community taking part, thanks again to the efforts of folk at St Agnes and the generosity of Wade’s Charity.
Wade’s Charity originated in 1530 during the reign of King Henry VIII when Thomas Wade left property in his will, which has since been added to by others, for the benefit of the people of Leeds.
Now managed by its Trustees - the monies produce an income from which grants are offered to Leeds-based charities and community groups.
