St Agnes' Burmantofts celebrate Racial Justice Sunday

St Agnes’ Burmantofts came alive as they celebrated Racial Justice Sunday with a special service on Sunday, February 8.

The church was filled with energy, warmth, and hope as people came together to mark the day.

From the moment people arrived, the atmosphere was welcoming and inclusive, with the entrance and halls adorned with world flags, helping everyone who entered to feel seen, valued, and welcome.

The service, hosted by the Revd Caitlin Carmichael-Davis, Vicar at St Agnes’, featured a sermon by Frederico Vuni, Lay Minister, who spoke about addressing racial injustice in and reminded attendees that the Word of God calls us to set the captive free.

His message encouraged people not just to worship, but to actively embrace change and work for justice.

A highlight of the day was the joined service with Christ Church International and the Eritrean Orthodox Church, including input from Pastor John.

This collaboration enriched the prayers and worship, strengthening relationships and laying a foundation for ongoing work on racial justice in the community.

The event was initiated by Joy Thomas, Wellsprings Together Racial Justice Engagement Enabler, who worked with the PCC and planning team to make the day a success.

Joy said: “The day was vibrant and inclusive, with activities reflecting the diversity we celebrated: prayers in different languages, a beautiful ethnic jewellery stall, engaging children’s activities, and a delicious, diverse buffet.

“The buffet featured contributions from church members alongside food provided by St Barnabas Kitchen, fully funded with thanks to the Diocesan Racial Justice Unit Project.

“It was also wonderful to see the Revd Brunel James in attendance, representing the unit and showing support for the work being celebrated.

“Racial Justice Sunday at St Agnes was more than a service - it was a celebration of faith, unity, and action.

“It inspired worship, connection, and a shared commitment to justice in our community.”

Feedback was positive, with community groups seeking further engagement and several attendees new to the church expressing interest in joining future Sunday services.
