St Paul’s Alverthorpe has marked 200 years of worship with events and a celebration service.
On Saturday, June 28, the Wakefield area church threw open its doors and invited people in for bacon butties, crafts, tea and cake.
People participating could make stained glass window bookmarks, bracelets and iced biscuits.
The church also shared a well-researched history of the church, as well as a brand-new handmade model of the church, built by someone married at St Paul’s in the 1960s.
Scores of people climbed to the top of the tower, with some playing the church’s carillon of bells.
The weekend was capped off on Sunday, June 29 with a celebration communion service where the Rt Revd Malcolm Chamberlain, Bishop of Wakefield, preached.
The Revd Diane Komorowski, Associate Vicar in the North Wakefield Benefice, said: “For those who did it, climbing to the top of the tower is no mean feat, so the badges for going to the top were definitely earned!
"The views over Wakefield are pretty spectacular.
“It was brilliant to be able to share with Bishop Malcolm all that the school and the community had put together, and to look to build on our heritage as we look forward to many more years of worship in the much-loved church on the top of the hill.”
