St Helen’s Denton will be celebrating the art of stained glass by hosting a traveling art exhibition this September.
The Teithiau exhibition, taking place on September 11 and 12 from 10am to 5pm, is an ongoing collaboration with several stained glass creative artists on the theme of Journeys.
The original exhibition was planned for July 2020 in All Saints Church Weston, but COVID-19 prevented this.
The project grew into a successful travelling exhibition first shown at the Stained Glass Museum in Ely Cathedral, followed by a further event at St Mary’s Barnard Castle.
St Helen’s Denton will play host to the exhibition in Yorkshire, showcasing stained glass work and beautiful cards by Jonathan Cooke, Catrin Davies, Nicola Kantorowicz, Elizabeth Lamont, Rachel Phillips and Christian Ryan, which will also be for sale.
Jonathan Cooke will be on hand to demonstrate stained glass techniques and answer questions about the church’s unique East window, the only complete extant picture window by Henry Gyles, completed in 1700 and of huge heritage importance.
About working with stained glass, Jonathan said: “One of my earliest memories is of watching the play of coloured light on walls, transmitted through the stained glass windows of my local church.
“I am a keen observer of nature, buildings and people, and always have to hand a small sketch book and pencil to capture the fleeting moment.
“Life drawing, too, is vital for both reconstruction of damaged windows, and my own work.
“Some of these ideas have, over the years, found their way into my own stained glass pieces, which I work on in my spare time; sometimes at the end of the day, or waiting for paint to dry or kiln to come up to temperature.”
