St Martin’s in Potternewton, Leeds has seen a musical revolution in recent months. The choir had dwindled to two or three people but after a recruitment drive they now have an expanding body of singers to sing anthems and Psalms at the Sunday Parish Eucharist in addition to leading congregational singing. And now Taizé services and Choral Evensongs are also flourishing.
Organist and Choir Trainer Matthew Lazenby said: ‘It is excellent that there are sufficient enthusiastic volunteers in St Martin’s parish to kick-start a choral tradition in this church. We are bucking a national trend at a time when many church choirs are in decline. To further this excellent start we are looking for more sheet music and I will be glad to hear and collect from any churches in the diocese that might be wishing to dispose of any!’
