Churches across the Diocese of Leeds opened their doors to trick or treaters on Halloween, providing a welcome rest from the damp weather and sharing the good news of Jesus as the Light of the World.
The Parish of Wortley and Farnley held a Light Stop event, handing out free tea, coffee, bacon sandwiches, glo-sticks and offering passers-by a chance to warm up.
In total they welcomed over 250 people through their doors, serving over 200 rashers of bacon and innumerable cups of tea and coffee.
Revd Chris Balding, curate at Wortley and Farnley, said, “It was incredible to see so many people hanging about in the church hall. I loved how thankful and surprised people were that the church would do this for free. "
Wendy Gaunt, treasurer at Wortley and Farnley, said, "Light Stop was a joy to see and be a part of, warm and loving Christian hospitality with a warm drink and a bacon butty on a cold wet evening; on the ground mission in action!"
Denise, an Ordinand Student from St Hild, said, "I have never liked Halloween, I am always so worried about the focus on darkness but my experience of helping out at the St John's Light Stop has given me a whole new perspective on the opportunity to spread some light and reach out to the community with hospitality"
Over in Chickenley, the team at Dewsbury Parish made use of their Destination 211 double decker bus to hold a light party, drawing around 150 visitors from the local community.
They served hotdogs, buns and hot chocolate and gave out 'Bags of Hope’. Families also sat to listen to a light bulb trick presentation of the Good news of Jesus who is Light of the World.
Christ the King, Battyeford, also hosted a Light Party. The local community was invited to come along for fun and food. Around 80 people came to enjoy the crafts and games, all light themed. Free hotdogs, drinks and cakes were served, and every child got a goody bag to take home.
Alison Grant, member of Christ the King, said, "It was a really joyful party – great to have the light shining on a very dark and wet Halloween evening!"
