Dragon to the rescue of St George's Crypt on St George's day

Students from Leeds Metropolitan University have spent St George’s Day, (April 23rd) supporting St George’s Crypt by creating a dragon made out of coins in the city centre.

Crowds watched as the Events Management students took over a corner of Millennium Square to  create the work of art, and re-enact the story of St George and the Dragon.  Children joined the students in helping to complete the coin dragon, and to complete the event one of those taking part dressed as St George to bring the story to life.

The coins themselves were donated by members of the public walking past and all will be given to the Crypt for its work among the homeless and disadvantaged. Leader of Leeds City Counncil,  Councillor Keith Wakefield, was one of those who contributed to the dragon.

The event was accompanied by a tombola, cake stall and music from St George’s Church. Martin Barry, a volunteer at St George’s Crypt said; “The weather was glorious and it was wonderful to chat to so many people about the work of the Crypt.

“It is great to celebrate our patron saint and the Crypt’s namesake, with an event which supports such an important cause.”
