Historic area office sold

The Wakefield Area Office are moving to new premises after the sale of Church House at the end of South Parade.

Originally acquired as a gift by the Church of England from Miss Mary Thompson in the early 1920's, the grade two listed property has served as diocesan offices for a number of decades.

During this time the House has had a rich history. Cathedral clergy and their families have lived there, it has been a happy place for Diocesan staff to work in, a welcoming place for people to drop in and there have been many fun garden parties in the extensive grounds.

Photographs of past Diocesan Bishops lined the staircase, beginning with Bishop Walsham Howe of “For all the Saints” fame and a favoured prelate of Queen Victoria, and were a montage of the changing fortunes of our church.

Fifty years into its history as a diocesan house, Miss Kate Greenhalgh left a substantial bequest for its re-ordering.

Far too big now and uneconomical for current needs, the Wakefield Area team are on the move.

The house has been sold and from Tuesday, August 31 Bishop Tony, Archdeacon Peter Townley, Caroline Asquith and the ENHANCE Academy Trust staff  will be moving to their new premises at:

Thornes Park Campus
Thornes Park
Wakefield
WF2 8QZ

They look forward to seeing you there and beginning a new chapter in the life of the Diocese and Area, continuing to serve Christ in that place.
