Incumbent Potternewton with Little London

Our vision as the Diocese is about confident clergy equipping confident Christians to live and tell the good news of Jesus Christ.  For all of our appointments we are seeking clergy who have a joyful and confident faith which has inspired a track record of church growth.

The benefice of Potternewton with Little London is a single parish with two parish churches: St Martins’, Potternewton, and All Souls’, Little London.

The two churches and their areas are quite distinct. St Martin’s serves Chapeltown, reaching from the inner city with its traditionally Afro-Carribean communities, northwards into the more affluent Chapel Allerton with its independent retail businesses, restaurants and coffee shops. The congregation reflects the diversity of the area, and the tradition of worship is broadly central. They are very aware of the need to grow and to include more younger people.

All Souls’ serves Little London, which has developed from mainly council housing in the 1950s and 60s to a mixed area of high-rise and low-rise housing. The congregation of All Souls’ is keen to maintain the distinctive traditions of the church, with its anglo-catholic liturgy in a significant historic building. Formerly a separate parish of about 5,000 people, it was joined to Harehills in a team benefice, then to Potternewton as a ‘conventional district’. The pastoral arrangements continue under review.

The previous incumbent’s role was to concentrate on Potternewton and offer light-touch supervision to All Souls’, where ministry has been led by retired clergy on a self-supporting basis with governance by a district church council. It is envisaged that this arrangement will continue at present. The primary role of the new incumbent will be to grow St Martin’s in numbers, discipleship and effective service.
