CELEBRATING OUR DIVERSE COMMUNITIES – a weekend of fun.
Community groups committed to celebrating diversity are holding fun days in Wakefield and Dewsbury this Saturday – including a football tournament between imams and clergy.
The civil liberties and racial justice campaign group, Just West Yorkshire, will transform Wakefield Cathedral steps tomorrow (Sat) into a party with a range of activities and music.
Their event coincides with a visit to the city by the far right group, National Front and Just West Yorkshire have urged everyone to come and join in the fun from 10.30am and celebrate the city’s diversity.
The Bishop of Wakefield, the Rt Revd Tony Robinson said: “Many of us are working very hard to build up good relationships between the different communities and groups of people in a city as diverse as Wakefield.
“It is not appropriate for people from outside our region to come and tell us who we should live with locally,” he added.
Over in Dewsbury, the community cohesion group, Kumon Y’All have organized their annual sporting fun day on Savile Town Playing Fields designed to build bridges between different communities in the Dewsbury and Batley area.
This year there will be another football tournament between clergy and imams as well as a wide range of sporting fun and games for all the family.
Organisers want it to be bigger and better than before to unite the communities in and around Dewsbury creating friendships and better understandings between people.
The all day event kicks off with two children’s football tournaments for under 13’s and under 15’s. In the afternoon, the adults take centre-stage in an over-forties tournament with teams from local institutions: priests and imams, West Yorkshire Police, Thornhill Community Academy teachers, Westborough High School teachers, Kirklees Council staff, as well as local residents from Savile Town, Overthorpe (Thornhill) and Batley residents all joining together.
The fun day activities include competitions in archery, press ups, a tug of war and an assault course.
They aim is to raise £5,000 for Dewsbury Hospital.
