Archdeacon of Leeds to retire

The Venerable Paul Hooper, who has been Archdeacon of Leeds since 2012, is to retire on 31 October.

Until the new Diocese of Leeds was created in 2014, Archdeacon Paul had served all his ministry in the former Diocese of Ripon & Leeds, most notably as Director of Clergy Development from 2009-2012 and before that as Vicar of St Mark’s, Harrogate for more than 14 years.

Bishop Nick says, “We are hugely indebted to Paul Hooper for his service to the Church in a number of capacities in the former diocese of Ripon & Leeds, followed by committed, gracious and diligent service in the new Diocese of Leeds.

“He has brought wisdom to the shaping of the new diocese, and adapted with professionalism and godly generosity to changes in structure and practice in his new archdeaconry.

“Paul will be retiring to Harrogate in December and will continue to offer ministry in retirement in this diocese. I want to thank him and God for his rich ministry from which so many people have benefitted.

“Please pray for Paul and Judy as they now look towards what we pray will be a long and happy retirement.

"We will be holding a farewell service in Leeds Minster in due course".

Archdeacon Paul says, “It has been a great joy and a huge privilege to have served my ministry in Yorkshire – God’s own county!  Over the years and in various posts, I have made lasting friendships and worked with wonderful colleagues.

“Not so many people get to experience at first hand the birth and early development of a brand new diocese. I have been fortunate to have been Archdeacon of Leeds at just such a time of transition.

“I hope that retirement will give me more time to spend with family and friends - and greater scope to develop new interests. I look forward to continuing my life’s journey as disciple of Jesus Christ – and hope to discover fresh opportunities for service in and through his Church.”
