Barnsley school keeps up Whitwalk tradition

The annual “Whit Walk” celebration for St John the Baptist church school in Dodworth, Barnsley took place on Friday.

Children invited their parents, carers, grandparents and neighbours to join them and the procession left school around 1.15pm to follow the samba band on its way to church.

All those in the procession were encouraged to wear fiery colours - red, yellow and/or orange -in honour of Pentecost and asked to bring something to wave as they processed through the streets.

The Bishop of Wakefield, the Rt Revd Tony Robinson joined the group and said: “Dodworth Academy are keeping up the ancient tradition of Whitwalks. Each year the school processes from the school to the church led by a local farmer on his tractor.

“Year 6 perform as a Samba Band and all the children are dressed in colourful clothes and waving hand made flags. It’s a really joyous occasion!

The procession was led by the Revd Keith Freeman, Associate Priest of Dodworth, Cawthorne, Hoylandswaine and Silkstone with Stainborough.
