Battle of the Somme will be marked at Whitechapel

A service of remembrance in conjunction with the Spenborough Branch of the Royal British Legion will be held at Whitechapel Church, Cleckheaton on Thursday 30th June at 8pm to mark the first day in the Battle of the Somme.
Branch Chairman, Eddie Morton said “This is an opportunity for the people of the valley to mark the sacrifice made by soldiers of the local regiments in this infamous battle. The battle started on the 1st of July, which became known as the blackest day in British military history, on that day 22 men from the Spen Valley lost their lives”.
During the service wreaths will be laid for these 22 men by members of the RBL and the congregation. If you have a family member who fell on the first of July 1916 we would welcome you to lay the wreath on behalf of your family.
Vicar of Whitechapel, Rev Brunel James said “Anyone with a family association with this battle, or an interest in it, will be most welcome”.
