Beer, bells, brass, bikers and bhajis: Pentecost in Huddersfield

Beer, bikes, bells, brass and bhajis are the theme for a Pentecost celebration with a difference in the gardens of a town centre church.

The gardens next to Huddersfield Parish Church will be opened up on Friday and Saturday this week for a traditional beer festival that will also see a performance by the Elland Silver Brass Band on Friday evening and on Saturday the West Yorkshire branch of the Christian Motorcyclist Bikers will arrive in formation through the town to demonstrate their bikes.

Bellringers from St Peter’s and surrounding towers in the area will ring quarter peals at intervals throughout both days and there will be fresh bhajis available.

The event runs from 12 noon until 8pm on Friday 2 and Sat 3 in St Peter’s Garden’s, next to the town’s parish church, with five different beers, a cider, wines, prosecco and soft drinks on offer.

It has been funded by local businesses and organisations and the vicar, the Revd Canon Simon Moor said: “This is about bringing people together for a celebration and part of the church’s on-going commitment to community engagement.

“We’ve been touched by the generosity of local businesses in helping us put this together and we hope it is the start of something,’ he added.
