On Tuesday 7 July, Beeston is holding a free inter-faith music concert - ten years to the day when two men from Beeston (along with two others) set off bombs that killed 56 people in London.
Vicar of Beeston, the Revd Lindsey Pearson, says, “Beeston will receive media attention again on Tuesday and so, rather than marking the anniversary of the London attacks, we’re having a concert by Berakah, a Christian, Jewish and Muslim music collective, to show some of the good things that happen when faiths work together”.
Bishop Nick said, "The rumour of bad news has to be dispelled by the narration of good news. Where religious distinctives are often held up as divisive in society, there are some wonderful examples of good news initiatives that bring people of different faiths into a common cause. I hope that Berekah will challenge and inspire."
Berekah’s unique sound fuses jazz, classical and Middle Eastern elements, with the aim of promoting peace, and the event is organised by Faith Together in Leeds 11 and the Hamara Centre, both of which bring people together in the local community.
Hanif Malik, CEO of the Hamara Centre, said: “We're confident that the event will help contribute to the great community spirit we have here in Beeston. The diversity of the musicians reflects the multiculturalism and broad range of communities that live in our area. Music can often build bridges that otherwise wouldn’t exist, especially if there is a powerful and positive message in the music itself. The Berakah Project (meaning Grace or Blessing) promotes this message perfectly.”
The event starts at 6pm on Tuesday 7 July at the Watsonian Pavilion in Cross Flatts Park, Beeston.
