Bishop Nick has spent a morning seeing what goes on behind the scenes when people in Yorkshire call for medical help via 999 - or 111.
The Yorkshire Ambulance Service, which provides 24-hour emergency and healthcare services right across Yorkshire, receives an average of 2,000 emergency calls per day.
Bishop Nick said, "It was fascinating to discover the scale of activity and the use of sophisticated, interconnected technology - which can mean that an ambulance is on its way almost as a call is being made.
"But each call involves a human interaction and the care of both those in need of help as well as the call operators (who may need to tell someone how to give CPR over the phone, or even delivery a baby) is impressive."
The Y.A.S. employs 4,670 staff and has a fleet of 500 emergency vehicles.
FREE FIRST AID COURSES
The Yorkshire Ambulance Service is offering to deliver free first aid awareness courses to any church or group. The course lasts 2.5 hours and includes cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and how to treat the most common emergencies such as a heart attack or stroke.
