Quality local materials and workmanship mean a church in the Bradford area has recently been honoured with an award for its new expansion and reordering.
The Ilkley Civic Society has given its Design & Conservation Award, the highest level of recognition, to All Saints Church Ilkley, and Halliday Clark, local architect.
The award honours the detailed design and construction of a new contemporary link building between the church and its hall, as well as the reordering of All Saints itself, based on an original concept by Overtons architects.
Derek Twine, Development Coordinator for All Saints, said: “This civic recognition is a boost to the Church family at this time, and gives great encouragement to our mission to be a blessing on our town and wider community.”
The link building adds to the church a new kitchen and accessible toilets, as well as displays showcasing continuous Christian worship and witness on the site since 627AD, made possible by a grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
The construction work was by local builders Dobson Construction Ltd, using local materials, including Yorkshire stone for the new floor.
Lisa McIntyre, Team Leader for the Church Buildings and Pastoral Reorganisation team in the diocese, said: “It is fantastic to see this recognition from the Civic Trust, acknowledgement of the high standards of conservation, design and workmanship achievable in church building projects.
“Even more pleasing to see is the Trust’s recognition of the church site as a facility for the community as a whole.
“The scheme has been greatly successful in making sense of the multiple uses of the site, which encompasses the church and church hall, knitting together high modern standards with unique and irreplaceable heritage, and enabling worship to continue comfortably alongside community use.”
