Calverley’s first walking nativity

A walking nativity – lit by homemade lanterns - will take place for the first time in Calverley this year.

On Sunday 14 December, local residents are invited to follow and watch the story of the first Christmas unfold at different locations around the village. At each point carols and biblical readings will accompany the dramatic tableaux. The Revd Phil Arnold, vicar of St Wilfrid’s says,“We hope lots of people will dress up as characters such as shepherds and angels as part of the procession.”

The event has been organised by St Wilfrid’s and Calverley Methodist Church, working in partnership with Creative Calverley who are encouraging people to make their own lanterns beforehand to help light the way around the village. Gael Timbers, Founder of Creative Calverley, said, “It’s fantastic to see new initiatives like this happening in Calverley, especially ones that bring people of all ages together. It all helps to build a stronger community.”

After seeing the main events in the story, such as the Angel Gabriel, shepherds, wise men and Mary and Joseph, the procession will end with a nativity scene at The Barn, next to St Wilfrid’s. The event will be rounded off with mince pies, hot drinks and mulled wine

Creative Calverley have also created an advent windows trail some which will be visible on the nativity route.

Photographs of the event, which starts at Calverley Methodist Church at 4pm, will appear on the Creative Calverley website www.creativecalverley.co.uk.
