Jesus being the Light of the World was celebrated at spectacular Candlemas services held across the diocese.
Ripon Cathedral welcomed hundreds of folk who were dazzled by thousands of candles, as captured in this bird’s-eye view taken by a visiting professional photographer.
Stephen Craven, Assistant Secretary on the Diocesan Advisory Committee, took this picture at St Paul’s, Drighlingon, on this day of worship which took place in our many churches.
Candlemas marks the Feast of the Presentation of Our Lord Jesus at the temple in Jerusalem and also the Feast of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
Revd Heston Groenewald, vicar at All Hallows, Leeds, reflected:
“Candlemas is the day we realise that eternity can come into time and touch us in the form of a tiny child, that God appears at last in his temple, not as a transcendent overlord, but as a vulnerable pilgrim, coming in love to walk the road of life alongside us.”
Wakefield Cathedral also held a Candlemas service and a video excerpt can be viewed here:
