Professor Mark Hill QC, the Diocesan Chancellor will seek to ‘de-mystify’ the law surrounding the ‘faculty’ system when he gives a public lecture at the Diocesan Offices in Leeds on Thursday 12 July (5pm-7pm).
It is the first public lecture by Chancellor Hill since the merger of the consistory courts of Bradford, Wakefield and Leeds and Ripon into a single diocesan court.
The lecture will focus on the practice and procedure of the consistory court with regard to the faculty jurisdiction and will be of particular interest to parochial clergy and churchwardens in the diocese.
“The lecture is designed as a simple introduction to the Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction and Care of Churches Measure 2018 which comes into force later this year,” said Chancellor Hill. “The new Measure codifies and simplifies the process and procedure of the consistory court.”
The Chancellor’s lecture will explore how the faculty system works, de-mystify some of its perceived complexities and provide guidance for those who are likely to make use of it in the years ahead.
The lecture is being organised by the Ecclesiastical Law Society as part of its innovative series of Northern Province Lectures. It is open to members and non-members.
There is no charge but prior booking is recommended. Refreshments will be provided.
