Christian walkers stride out to fund Tanzanian clean water projects

Fundraisers from different churches will be getting footsore to support Water for Life projects in Tanzania.

Led by vicar Maggie McLean of Christ the King, Battyeford and her trusty spaniel Molly,  ramblers Cath Fox, Harvey Walsh, Meg Willard and Chris Smith will be walking coast to coast from St Bees near Whitehaven to Robin Hood's Bay.

They set off on Sunday, September 8 and will walk 192 miles in 14 days through the stunning scenery of the Lake District and the Dales with the goal of raising £8,000 to buy a new bore hole in one of our three link dioceses in Tanzania.

"The Diocese of Leeds is linked with the Dioceses of Royra, Tarine, and Mara and three quarters of people in Tanzania survive by subsistence farming and clean water is in extremely short supply,"  said Maggie, pictured right.

"You have to be really careful about where bore holes are sunk, or they can simply dry out within a year or two - that's why we always get expert help with our projects.

"We've had this link for 30 years and we keep going back to check that money raised here is being well spent," said Maggie, who is now the diocesan link officer for Tanzania.

"These are very much Christian projects which show how the Anglican Church cares deeply for the poorest of the poor and how we also believe in life, before death.

"And that means clean water!" Maggie said.

Cath Fox, who attends St John the Baptist, Wakefield added: "Water for Life projects help local communities bring clean water closer to the centre of the village through bore holes, pumps, water harvesting and bio filters.
"Sources of water are often many miles away from the centres of community and on average people in this part of Tanzania walk 4 miles a day to collect water and that equates to about 2 hours.
"Access to clean water is essential to the life and well-being of all people and benefits to health are enormous."
