Churches encouraged to engage with Leeds Citizens

Leeds Citizens - Communities working together for social justice and change in Leeds

Clergy and parishes in Leeds Episcopal Area are encouraged to get involved in the Founding Assembly for Leeds Citizens, which takes place on 7 July

Archdeacon Paul Hooper says, “I’m hoping that a number of clergy and parishes from across the city will join me at the event. A number of Leeds parishes have recently affiliated to Leeds Citizens and they’ve found it to be a good way to engage with their communities for the common good."

The official launch of the alliance takes place on 7 July (7.30-9.30pm) at Leeds United Football Club. One of its aims is to build positive relationships with the power brokers of the city, securing commitments on health and care, public transport, wages and debt.

Paul Hooper adds, “The date chosen for the Founding Assembly is the 10th anniversary of the 7/7 bombings - a tragic event for the nation, with particular significance for Leeds. Whatever the media focus around that date, the real story of Leeds' civil society is one of cooperation, determination and passion for justice. Our hope is that the launch of Leeds Citizens, with music, testimony and participation from diverse communities will be a dynamic and exciting demonstration of these values.

“The event will close with a community iftar – the sunset meal for Muslims to break their fast during Ramadan – and food will be provided for all. In the spirit of hospitality and friendship, we hope that as many people as possible, from all faiths and none, will stay for some delicious food”.
