Church groups from Chapel Allerton (St Matthew's and the Methodist Church) and Gipton have visited their local Lidl to say a public thank you to them for paying the living wage.
The Revd Susan Rusholme from St Matthew's, says, "We were lead by Tom Chigbo, from Leeds Citizens. We met with the Lidl management and gave them a letter which both thanked them for being a living wage employer and urged them to take the next step to become accredited by the Living Wage Foundation. We also gave them a card signed by members of the congregation and some chocolates.
"The staff were bemused at first and thought it was a demonstration, but they quickly realised that this was a good thing and happily engaged with us.
"Later that morning a group of us went to Oxford Place in the city centre with balloons and banners advertising the new rate - and we were filmed for BBC Look North. We then went into Park Place and delivered letters to local firms asking them if they paid the living wage or if they would like to speak to Leeds Citizens about becoming a living wage employer.
"Leeds Citizens were a real source of encouragement and support. We think short sharp actions are crucial to give focus to such important issues."
