Kirkheaton Parish Church will bring local residents together as it hosts its first ever Comedy Night this month with the help of highly acclaimed stand-up comedian Tony Vino.
Organised by those across Kirkheaton Parish, the evening will be 'good for building relationships' while people sit back and enjoy an evening of clean comedy.
On Saturday the 26th September, the church will open its doors for this evening of hilarity as Tony Vino will be supported by two church members who take their comic inspiration from Milton Jones’ side-splitting wordplay.
Rector of Kirkheaton, the Revd Richard Steel, says, “This is another new venture for us, and one I’m greatly looking forward to.
“Tony’s life and interests are wide ranging, and so is his material. He is well aware of social and political issues but has a warm, friendly style.
“People can come along for a good laugh, without fear of being offended.
“Getting together is good for building relationships, and it’s great we can have a really good evening and show that we can do so without anything that would offend. That’s not always true today.”
Tony Vino is a greatly sought after comedian and has performed at a number of high profile fundraising events for charities such as Christian Aid, Oxfam, the Fairtrade Foundation and TearFund, while also being the official warm up comedian for BBC Songs of Praise and having a regular slot on BBC Radio Manchester.
Richard says, “We are holding it purely for social reasons - to have a good laugh ourselves and to invite friends.
Mr Steel continues, “We are just hoping to cover the costs, any profit will be a bonus and will help us with our future budget.
“Almost all the money we need in our churches comes from direct giving - it was only while we were working on our building that we did any significant fundraising events.
“Even those few events each year that do make money (Arts Festival, Bonfire and Fireworks, Christmas Tree Festival) are primarily community/family events.”
He adds, “With our amazing new building we can do so much more so as well as the usual concerts we are trying more things, like Barn Dances, exhibitions, even a Karaoke night a few months ago.
“If someone has a good idea then we’ll run with it - and they are a very creative bunch of people here when it comes to ideas!”
The evening will begin at 19:30 with a traditional pie and pea supper included in the ticket price.
Tickets are £8 and must be purchased in advanced from the Parish Office by calling: 01484 531449.
Tea and coffee will be available on the night with your ticket, but everyone is welcome to bring their own drinks with them.
