The importance of commitment was the subject of a sermon by the Bishop of Wakefield, the Rt Revd Tony Robinson, when RAF Cadets from Sectors 4 and 5 of the South and West Yorkshire Wing of the Air Training Corps came together for their annual service of commemoration at St Hilda’s Church, Cross Green, on Sunday, February 2, to give thanks for the work of the organisation.
Bishop Tony talked about the pilots who fought in the Battle of Britain in 1940, during the Second World War, many of whom made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
The service was held In the presence of the Deputy Lieutenant of West Yorkshire, Squadron Leader David Dinmore RAF (retired), the Lord Mayor of Leeds, Councillor Eileen Taylor, and Wing Commander Brian Daniel.
Father Darren Percival, Priest in Charge of St Hilda’s, and Deputy Wing Chaplain, presided and enrolled nine new Cadets into the Corps. 
Cadets of Squadrons 168 The City of Leeds, 208 North Leeds, 868 Mirfield, and 96 Dewsbury remembered the past, present and future Cadets of the Corps during the service which commenced with the RAF March Past and the assembling of a Drum Head Altar.
The RAF Air Cadets is the biggest youth organisation in the United Kingdom and is rooted within the Christian Faith.
“We have a few Chaplains in the Diocese but are always looking for more.
“As a Chaplain, it is not all about religion, but moral support,” said Father Darren, who has supported the National Cadet Choir, camps, flying and gliding.
He added: “The ATC motto is 'Venture - Adventure' and the cadets know that it's more than just words - it's an attitude that helps you stand out from the crowd.
“This is demonstrated in all they do, from parades such as Sunday, flying, drill, gliding, music, shooting and sport.
“There is something for everyone.
“The motto of our parent service ‘Per Ardua Ad Astra’ - the Latin phrase, meaning "through adversity to the stars", encompasses what it also means for the Cadets. 
“Some of them don’t get the best start in life, but to be part of the excellent organisation, with fun, humour and teamwork they become the stars in a darkened world.”
