Cooking bishop\'s visit to Leeds Market

Two days after he was welcomed to the city at a service in Leeds Minster, Bishop Paul Slater has paid a visit to Leeds Market to meet some of the traders.

Bishop Paul is also a  keen cook and sometimes gets his ingredients from the market. He says, “I’m impressed by the affordable but quality produce at Leeds Market. And as the city is feeling particularly proud of Nadiya Hussain’s triumph at the Great British Bake Off, it feels like an added spur to  get into the kitchen.

“And of course there are multiple benefits from cooking from scratch. In the run-up to the UN climate change conference in Paris at the end of November, there’s a lot of talk about what countries can do, but this is something significant that individuals can do to help the environment, because home-made food reduces packaging waste. And as Leeds Market is right next to the bus station, you can get there by public transport.

“And then, on top of the health benefits from using  less sugar and salt than ready meals, I find following a recipe a therapeutic end to the working day. So, in one fell swoop a visit to Leeds Market can benefit the environment, your purse and your health.”

After his visit the Bishop went straight back home with his purchases to prepare sea bass and roasted vegetables.
