Do miracles happen and the Big Bang theory are two of the topics in a series of talks exploring Christianity and Science in Huddersfield this Advent.
The talks will be held at Sandy Mount Extra Care Home, Blackmoorfoot Road, Crosland Moor, Huddersfield from 11-12noon on the first three Thursdays of December.
They are led by Ian Blakeley, Reader at the United Benefice of St. Barnabas, Crosland Moor, Christ Church, Linthwaite and are open to those congregations and Crosland Hill Methodist Church and anyone else interested in coming along.
Ian said the three talks were aimed at non-scientist Christians, to help them address issues of science and faith. Each talk will outline the basic science behind each topic and how it relates to the Christian (biblical) understanding of the world.
Said Ian: “Christians in Science (CiS) have produced a first class series of resources, helping the church think more deeply about the interaction between faith and scientific discovery and these will be used as the basis for the talks.”
CiS is an international network of those concerned with the relationship between science and Christian faith, open to scientists, teachers, students and all those with an interest in this dialogue. Anyone with an interest in science and faith is welcome to join.
The first topic on Dec 1 is: - 'Thinking about the Big Bang'. How the universe began is one of the big questions addressed by all cultures and religions. Three key questions will be posed: 1. How did the universe begin? 2. Is the scientific answer in conflict with the Bible? 3. How do we interpret Genesis?
The second topic on Dec 8th is: 'Thinking about Evolution' The key questions in this talk are. 1.What is Evolution? 2.Why have so many Christians accepted Evolution since 1859? 3.How does Evolution fit in with creation?
And the final topic on Dec 15 is: 'Thinking about Miracles.' The key questions address are: Has science made miracles unbelievable? Do miracles happen today?
Science and faith was the theme for our first Diocesan Clergy Conference: Hope 2016 held in Liverpool in September with keynote speakers, Prof Brian Cox and the Revd Prof David Wilkinson, principal of St John’s College, Durham University.
