Dog biscuits and fortune cookies are not usually the stuff of wreaths – but this year the village of Scholes in Huddersfield has got crafty for a church-sponsored village Christmas wreath competition.
At the beginning of December the parish church of St Philip and St James’ in Scholes handed an empty wreath to each of the local businesses.
Two local pubs, the dog groomers, the hairdressers and butchers and all the local firms got busy - and they are now displayed in their shop windows for people to enjoy.
Many have used the theme of their business to find inspiration for their decorations. Some of the hairdressers have rollers and scissors, the Chinese takeaway has chopsticks and fortune cookies, the fish and chip shop used lots of sparkly tinsel fish and the dog groomers’ wreath is covered in dog biscuits!
The vicar, the Revd Richard Burge, said: “We’ve been really pleased at how people have entered into the spirit of this bit of seasonal fun.
“People have enjoyed spotting them around the village and everyone has their favourites,” he added
People can vote for their favourite up to Christmas Day and a prize will be given to the business whose wreath gets the most votes in the New Year.
