Double celebration at the University of Bradford

It will be a double celebration at Bradford University this week when both a new chaplain and a new chaplaincy space are commisioned by the Bishop of Bradford.

The Revd Andrew Howorth (pictured right with students) has joined the University’s Interfaith Chaplaincy team which represents various faith groups and provides spiritual support and pastoral care for all staff and students.

Andrew, previously Assistant Curate at St Peter’s Church, Addingham, will be co-ordinating a team which includes Roman Catholic, Muslim, Hindu, Sikh and Buddhist colleagues.

“I am very excited about this post”, he said. “It presents many opportunities to share the gospel news and offer the hand of friendship and hospitality to students, many of whom are a long way from home.”

After seven weeks so far in his new role he will be officially commissioned by Bishop Toby Howarth at the new Faith Centre in the University on Thursday 23 November. Leading the event will be Prof. Udy Archibong, Professor of Diversity and a Lay Canon at Bradford Cathedral. Also present will be the Lord Mayor of Bradford, colleagues, staff and students.

Andrew said, “This is an opportunity to let the University as much as anything else, know there is a new Chaplain in town!  The university has agreed to bring the Chaplaincy in-house and own it a little bit more. “

The new University inter-faith space will also be commissioned. What was an engineering store room is now the 'Faith Zone' which offers pastoral support, counselling and a place for prayer for members of the University.
