A day with Saint Mark to ‘leave people feeling refreshed and curious’ is the call from Halifax Vicar as he encourages people to explore the Gospel ‘in ways that may not always be possible in a sermon’.
Revd Kevin Barnard, Vicar of King Cross and Deanery Interfaith Officer, will lead the event on 10th October at Saint Paul’s Church, King’s Cross, Halifax, to ‘draw together people from different backgrounds and experiences and help them think they are not studying Mark on their own’.
Revd Barnard, says, “I have chosen Mark because we have been reading it Sunday by Sunday for a year and people may have more to say in the light of such reading, and because elements of the style and theology of Mark are still emerging - and will until the end of the world!”
“I hope to encourage the reading of the book as a whole, which is not always possible in the course of week-by-week preaching on set passages,” he says. “But I also want to encourage people to look at the text as speaking about real people, in some ways like themselves.”
Revd Barnard continues, “There are certain themes running through Mark which deserve to be considered. Some of these may emerge in the early part of the day when those who come will do some of the work, but this is one more instance of how studying in this way can allow scope for reflection of a sort that is not always possible in the intensive study of a small passage for a sermon or Bible-study conducted along the usual lines.”
