As the country heads towards a vote over whether to remain in or leave the European Union, all three cathedrals of the diocese have held presentations and debates on the EU Referendum.

Ripon Cathedral hosted a referendum debate on Thursday June 9th with keynote speaker, Lord Wallace of Saltaire (pictured left).Bishop Nick Baines also provided further theological reflection on the discussion and debate. The Dean of Ripon, Very Revd John Dobson chaired the evening.
William Wallace (Lord Wallace of Saltaire) is foreign affairs spokesman for the Liberal Democrats in the House of Lords. From 2010-2015 he was a coalition government minister representing the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the Cabinet Office.
Lord Wallace was also the keynote speaker at two evenings at Bradford and Wakefield Cathedrals to debate ‘Brexit’ and discuss how faith could shape individual decisions.

Searching questions were asked from both sides of the debate and Lord Wallace provoked thought, touching on British and European history, our historic relationship with our European neighbours and the United States, and crucial issues facing Europe such as the environment and migration.
Still to come - Churches together in Burley in Wharfedale and Menston are hosting a Euro referendum hustings on June 20 th. 7:30pm at St Mary's church, Burley in Wharfedale. Includes speakers Philip Davies MP (leave) and Richard Corbett MEP (remain).

At Halifax Minster the Rt Hon Chris Bryant MP spoke for the Remain campaign with Alex Story former Conservation candidate for Wakefield and Business Manager for Leave.UK. Bishop Jonathan was in the Chair. The event on June 9th was sponsored by the Mid Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce.
Churches Together in Ilkley organised an evening to hear from experts on both sides - Tuesday June 7th at 7.30pm in Christchurch, Ilkley. Speakers included Henri Murison, speaking on behalf of Stronger In, and Paul Latham speaking on behalf of Vote Leave.

Reimagining Europe’s central aim is to create a space for Christian reflection and debate on Britain’s future relationship with Europe ahead of the forthcoming referendum on whether Britain should remain a member of the EU.
